The weekend in review
♥ Comments (14) ♥
Lots has been going on around here....
We had an ice/slush storm, and we made the mistake of going to see the Last King of Scotland during it. Eeegads. I’m happy to report that the disco old lady hat is very warm when the cold chicago wind is blowing 100 mph at my head.
The oscars, were sort of boring and ho-hum this year. I’m disappointed Pan’s Labrynth wasn’t nominated for best sound...the sound in that film was AMAZING.
Also i am not sure why last king of scotland wasn’t nominated for best original score. sheeesh. At least the academey got it right for once, with best director and best film. Let’s not count on them to get it right again for another 2 or so years. Go academy.
Let’s see what else. I picked up new glasses on friday. I did the deal where i got two pair for 70$. For us poor folk it’s an awesome dealio.
And i got some awesome mail over the weekend. I told y’all to check out Bethany’s jewelry. Did you? Cause she has quality stuff for CHEEP. I picked up these two pretty pieces and didn’t even spend 15$ including shipping people!
Also you guys who order project pouches from our shop are lucky lucky people. Because i convinced two esty sellers to send me samples of stitchmarkers to make your zipper pulls with their cards and samples. And the newest ones are super pretty from Zero The others are from this seller.
There was also Zander’s b-day party this weekend. It is very hard photographing a moving 4 year old when he’s with 5 other moving 5 yr olds. I’ve only got a few pictures to spare…
the birthday boy showing his presents
everyone run! (including lucy)
and who else in party hats but uncle Nat and auntie jen
we tried the hold the camera out but just succeeded in having really deformed heads and faces
speaking of weird shots look at this…
and for good measure look at those fingernails (or the other pair of frames)
I’ve worn glasses since i was 9 months old. Yes you read that right nine MONTHS old. I was born without muscle in my left eyeball. Basically my eye flipped into my nose. I also had 4-5 surgeries on my eyes before the ripe old age of 5. I HATE picking out glasses more than anything. I’ve had my current brown pair for 8 years and my orange pair for 5 years. I just change the lenses when i need to. Nathaniel was no help in picking out frames either. Other fun facts about my broken eyeballs include:
my two eyes don’t work together...so i can’t see a view master right..or thru binoculars correctly
i can’t see 3-d images or movies...even those new fangled new ones..i saw one last year and it was 40 min of smeary images
i had to play video games during my childhood to build the muscle in my eye, all hand eye coordination games.
I can’t see stairs while going down them easily. They look kinda flat. I have to go by feeling, i do terribly in the dark, or on the el platforms in rush hour.
*sigh*

What’s disco, old lady and shiney?
♥ Comments (7) ♥
Yes, ALL of those things. All of those things at ONCE! I’ll give you a few hints. I got a package from this super awesome blog-blog-bloggidty-blogger
it looks kind of like this…
it’s a sparkle hat from the stitch n’ bitch book! One in my favorite color. Check out how freakin’ awesome it is
and when you move look how shiney it gets
She had knit one herself and thought it was pretty sparkley, perhaps too sparkley. I told her when you hit the grey months out here a little sparkle could probably do ya. She offered to knit me one for fun. I just didn’t know she was so fast. She sent some fun things int he package and i have to say a major thanks for the beautiful fabrics and chocolate and lotion.
*** A little story: today i met erin and jessica at the mcdonald’s playland to let the kids play. When we were leaving i put on my new awesome hat. This little boy comes running up to me and says: WHOA! THAT IS A COOL HAT! IT’S SHHHHHINEY! He said it with the same enthusiasm as if there were a dinosaur on my head. I said thank you a friend made it for me, it is my favorite color! What’s yours? He said green, then drug his 3 brothers over to check the hat out. Upon seeing it they all three exclaimed: WHOOOOOOOA! SHINEY HAT! now the stitch n’ bitch book said it was a hit with the men. They didn’t just say it would be a hit witht he under age 10 circuit.****
Someone’s bithday is today!
Zander you are growing up so fast. Happy 4th birthday kiddlett.
Also i think i found a solution, thanks to my sisturd, for the stitch markers/ribbons on my dpn holders. wendy mentioned velcro.
i think it works pretty good. what do you think? Do you think this would be something you’d want? SHould i bother making a few for the shop? The one pictured will be going to Caitlyn, as a thank you giftie...altho i think she knits her socks on circs. oh well!

Hearts and WIPs
♥ Comments (7) ♥
no. get your head out of the gutter, seriously. Or well there’s no shame in wallowing in the gutter for awhile. Anyways. I’m not one much for Valentines day. I love my valentine, but i do for some reason love the color red and can’t get enough of tiny hearts as of late. So I bought a bunch of Moda’s hearts fabrics and a bunch of red stitch markers from one of my favorite etsy people and i’m making some presents for my fellow knitting peeps. I noticed when i was going to take some sock yarn tot he super bowl party..i hadn’t swatched for my sock and didn’t know which size DPN’s i’d need. Then i saw this crochet holder over on Nell’s blog and then these were born.
I just couldn’t figure out how to put the stitch markers on the ribbon and have the ribbon be detachable...so i used some of these..not the best way but it works.
I also just ordered some in spring colors to make some other friends some more. I hope everyone will like them. It took me forever to figure out the measurments. I hate math and stuff.
I also bought some of these last month and made a pretty coin purse for them

New Stuff
♥ Comments (4) ♥
I tried a new Amy Butler pattern, a little bit more challenging one. The Covington Bag. This little bag is very fussy. There’s a zillion pieces and the side treatment..i am not sure if it’s worth the end result. What i did discover is that mine is not quite right (on the sides) when comparing it to a sample in a quilt shop. *sigh* That’s ok, the freaking 3 hours it took me to sew this thing up was enough. I made this bag before the superbowl..i just hadn’t shared it with you yet. It is also in amy butler fabric, I’m not a quite a pink person but i am trying to channel my inner pink.
Here it is uncinched

Cinched

My sister and I also finished 4 more project bags for y’all. 2 more of the ever popular blue, black, lime flowers. Here’s a note. If you like the lining shown, the geometric blue that is shown inside..we’ve been strictly using this lining in this bag for over a year now. We’ve come tot he end of this fabric. The last 8 (2 are up) we cut this monday are the last 8 that have that lining. There will be no more of that lining after the next 6. So if you’ve had your eye on that bag and like the innards...get it while you can. We know y’all liked that linging and we kept it as long as we could.
We did get some new heavy duty home dec fabrics recently. They will be showing up slowly over the next 2 weeks. The first of these is a blue and black design. This fabric is very sturdy and has a nice modern design. We hope you enjoy.

I just love the way this fabric looks on the sides of the box-bag.

A Sort-of memememememememe
♥ Comments (1) ♥
Y’all should check out Bethany’s site. She also has some cool jewelry and cards up at her own URL I ordered a few bracelets for up and coming springtime. I’ll show them off once i get them..in the meantime check her out everything is handmade and quite pretty. Anyways i saw this over at her journal and thought hmmm i’ll bite…
looks like everything’s coming up in three’s
i like odd numbers
3’s are good
Movies:
1. Oldboy- like i said best film i’ve seen in 10 years (and i have a major in film)
2. The Great Muppet Caper - you seriously can’t beat Miss Piggy busting thru that stained glass window on her bike now can you?
3. Mr. SMith Goes to Washington- Jimmy Stewert never looked so good
Teevee:
1. Smackdown on Telemundo- nat doesn’t have cable and there’s clearly nothing to watch but this on saturdays at like 5pm
2. er- since the beginning baby
3. Degrassi- all of them including the next generation on THE N
CD:
hmmm Seems like i don’t listen to whole cd’s anymore...esepcially since nat has air tunes and just hits random on itunes and we listen for hours but:
1. Califone: Roots and Crowns- can’t get enough of Chinese Actor
2. Girls Vs. Boys : House of GVSB - i especially like to drive to this album, lake shore drive has never been better with GVSB
3. Sloan: Smeared- ok ok so it came out in like 1992 but you can’t beat any song on any given day on this album
SONGS:
1. since we’re on sloan...Underwhelmed by Sloan- it’s got the line affection has two f’s..especially when you’re dealing with me, can you get a better song about how a boy loves a girl who misses the point and can’t spell?
2. Michigan Girls by Califone...one of my most favorite and one of the prettiest songs they play. Jim brings out the fiddle on that one. Someone once told me when they heard this song they thought of me. (not nat) but nat put it on a sappy cd for me once
3. Turn My Camera On by Spoon- this song still to this day makes me want to shake my butt in a serious way
BOOKS:
ok since i took up knitting i haven’t read many books recently i did like
1. the end of faith by sam harris
2. under the banner of heaven
3. the time traveler’s wife

3. SASSY- yes i’ve read it since issue 2 and still have a stack, you know i’m cool so shhhhhh!
WEBSITES:
1. Artificical Memory- Nathaniel’s portfolio he is so talented
2. Moustache Factory - hey i have an intimate relationship witht he foreman
3. flickr- where else can i look at pools of bassett hound pictures for hours?

Nat’s new toy
♥ Comments (9) ♥
Nat got a new toy this weekend. We drove all the way to Northbrook to pick it up at the stupid FedEx place. (incedentally which was across the street from a UPS place) He got one of these crazy old cameras called a Kodak Duaflex II. I think he won it off ebay. When he told me he was going tot ake digital images with it i thought he was slightly crazy. Let me illustrate.
Here’s the camera:
Here’s the contraption he built for it
and here’s what you look like when you take pictures with it
and here’s what the final effect (after some cropping in photoshop) looks like (all photos are taken by nathaniel feb 2007
So as you can see it simulates a mediaum format shot. It’s shot thru the viewfinder. It’s kind of cool if you ask me and even better he says it only cost him 9$ (ebay people) and if you want the link to build the folding contraption go here and for a flickr group of photos from these cameras go here
And since i never post pictures of Simon, nat’s kitty. Here’s a few pictures of him while i was knitting my friends fetching mitts earlier in the month.

Winter storm 1, Jen 0
♥ Comments (4) ♥
That storm has seriously kicked my butt. I spent most of yesterday morning helping dig my sister out. Then borrowed her snowblower and spent another 2 hours trying to dig out my own drive. Especially since the snow plow came at 4am and pushed packed snow up to my thigh all at the end of the drive. Just how the hell are you supposed to get out when they do that? You don’t. I had 3 neighbors stuck because of that. And i spent at least an hour chiseling away at it with the snowblower. But my sister was back to work at her chemistry lab and i had zander to help. Except for when it did this at 3pm:
for those of you who don’t know what lake effect snow or a white out looks like, now you do. This was a cruel joke because this was the DAY AFTER we got 11 inches of heavy fluffy snow. The comcast guys at my house who were fixing the fried cable box were told not to drive when i took that above picture!
Now what do you do when it looks like that out and you spent 2 hours earlier digging out the drive and it WAS sunny?
snooze under some covers and just watch the outside become white. Plus my body finally caught up with me from the day before...what shoveling heavy snow 5 times over the course of the day and night really makes you sore. VERY SORE...stupid storm.
I am very behind on thanking some people. The other day i was in my jammies and refusing to comb my hair. You KNOW when that happens SOMEONE will catch you. Certainly enough the mailman rang the door bell with these two packages. They were such a suprise and fun to open.
Carol over at Celadon Cupcake has a beagle named Arrow. Every few months or so i start throwing stuff ina box for her and a few other bloggers. Apparently she beat me. she sent this lovely box.
Lucy and her bed have to model because it was the ONLY place natural grey light was falling that day.
she sent some cram cream warshrags, stickers, candies and SNOOPY! and for the dogs...special valentine treats. I then tortured the dogs with giving them one but telling them to wait while i snapped a picture for carol and arrow.
note samuel is doing another of her many looks with her buggy eyeballs. This look says Auntie Jennifer why must you torture me so?
and the next package i opened was from Rachel. She so thoughtfully sent along some orange things as a little b-day gift. I freakin’ love these pens. I know alot of y’all are into gel pens...i think i have found something new to collect.
Rachel you totally rock.
Suzie over at Purlygates FINALLY got my package ( i wrote the address down without my glasses on....note to self NEVER do that again..i messed up one number and sent her package into post office limbo and i am suprised she was able to retrieve it ok) You can see all the silly stuff i sent to her for our birthday swap. Anyways....i’ve got some WIP’s you can see...little coin purses that are going into some of those boxes for several bloggers that i’ve been tripping over..

Valentine
♥ Comments (7) ♥
My Valentine. His name is Nathaniel. He likes to be called Nat, but makes fun of my “chicago accent” and claims i say Naaat. He is my impatient little cupcake. Even though he WON’T PUSH MY GUTS BACK IN if i sudden explode somewhere...i still love him....lots. I love how Zander dotes over him and only asks uncle nat if he’s pooped every single time he talks to him...and being the awesome uncle nat that he is always answers him truthfully. He is the cutest boy ever, the smartest boy ever, the most talented boy ever and i try to tell him that everyday. He also has a mean streak to be reckoned with that i find very alluring.
silly boy. i will also remind everyone that you smiled once....mmmmm eyebrows
ok enough mushyness. This winter storm is literally kicking my butt. The primer thing on the snowblower broke. Bad news. Means i had to shovel the drive 5 times today. But 40-50 mph winds just killed that task after 30 min of shoveling the whole damn thing. We had a wicked storm blow through here. The power was out, you couldn’t see anything but white for hours, and well i won’t complain that much cause those people up there in NY in that one region now have over 10 FEET of effing snow and they are supposed to be getting more. 10 FEET people. I saw the pictures ont he news, the snow is piled higher than HOUSES. I hope to be back with some pictures of stuff and things that aren’t of the mushy nature tomorrow.

Knitting
♥ Comments (11) ♥
Yes, there’s been knitting going on over here. I knit a pair of fetching mitts for Joy’s b-day but didn’t photograph them, they are out of purple manos. I won’t go into detail about the terrible karma i’ve had with knitting these mitss...or knitting for my friend amy. So far i am clear that the knitting universe is telling me that it JUST ISN"T going to work right now.
So wendy has been holding two deconstructed projec tpouches i cut for myself last october for hostage. She said lucy needs a sweater. This..what follows is the number one reason i do not knit sweaters....ever. I do not enjoy seaming. I do not enjoy sewing something together at all, ever. I took measurments of the damn dogs. Their chests at the shoulders are larger than their under carriages. Especially Lucy, she like a box, but with a slim body. So here’s what i cast on for samuel, the cranky beagle…
Basically I’d use up every extra ball of bulky Lamb’s pride i had laying around and make this thing sans sleeves. First it’s not knit in the round and if it could be knit in the round it would save alot more time. But basically it looked like this when i knit the top.
so i layed it on samuel and kept checking well it fit her ok and the length was good
so i knit the second piece and sewed it on and then seamed the damn thing and wove in a million ends. Basically it took me all day, I put it on her and it drug on the ground. Basically it fit in the shoulders then it was too big around for her body and she just looked miserable. (hence no picture. So she now has scruffy’s (out old long haired doxie that has passed on) sweater.
here she is giving you one of her many “looks” she is not happy to ever be put in anything, warm or not.
So what happened to tthe sweater? I put it on Lucy. I will fiddle with it next week by unraveling an end and knitting some more length on it. but it works for her now.

Snarky Postal Workers
♥ Comments (7) ♥
Does anyone remember my run in with the tape nazi’s at the portage post office in december? for some reason i can’t get a link to my post, but it’s in december 06 just click it ont he left and scroll down a little. I want to tell y’all what happened when i was in the post office today. I waitied in line, because i had a global priority package and UNFORTUNEATLEY i can’t mail it out from the kiosk. I say that because i’d RATHER deal witht he kiosk than these smart-asses. Anyways...i’m paying and i hear a woman get off the phone and tell the other 3 teller’s “I KNEW IT HOBART DOES NOT HAVE TAPE OUT!!!” She sounded like a 5 year old on the playground doing something in a sing-songy way of i’ve told you so. So the tellers start talking about a man who had left the office 10 min ago. He apaprently asked for a piece of tape (not the roll) and they told him what they told me..no you can buy a roll for 5$. And he apparently said well Hobart (town that is 10 min away) has some tape out for people to use, why don’t you? SO THESE POSTAL TELLERS CALLED THE OFFICE ONCE HE LEFT TO PROVE HIM WRONG, THEN MAKE FUN OF HIM FOR 10 MIN IN FRONT OF THE ENOURMOUS LINE. Seriously folks...they had NOTHING better to do...like GET RID OF THE GINORMOUS LINE OR MAIL SOME STUFF.
So i’m about done i’m gtting myr eceipt and i’m pissed at them for being so snarky and mean spirited to EVERYONE about it. So i say rather loudly so everyone can hear...a simple truth.
Jen: Well the IRVING PARK post office in CHICAGO OFF OF CLARK STREET has 3 or 4 tape dispensers out. With all kinds of tape. AND IT’S RATHER NICE ACTUALLY. You don’t have to ask the TAPE NAZI’S for some and start world war III.
Postal worker with bad limp hair: Holding up a roll of “priority” packaging tape says: was the “free” tape this kind??
Jen: no they have masking tape, clear tape, and packaging tape.
Postal worker with limp hair: we’re “NOT ALLOWED” to have tape out
Jen: well it’s so nice to just grab a little piece when you need it and not be harassed by snarky postal workers
Jen grabs zander and leaves while postal worker with limp hair is still yelling about how they aren’t “allowed” to give tape out
I am POSITIVE they made fun of me for the next 10 min.
ok so what gives? is tape dangerous? DANGER! DANGER! NO TAPE FOR YOU! i mean the worst i can see is that you get some stuck to your nose and then your forehead and walk around with a “pig nose” all day. But still...those people need new intresting jobs or just something to do instead of just pissing me off.

If it’s not one thing….it’s another
♥ Comments (7) ♥
Ok so today it’s ABOVE ZERO. It’s clocking in at a comfortable 8 degrees. Thing is it looks like this now outside:
so yes it’s not sub-zero but it is RAINING DOWN SNOW. We’ve already received about 3 inches of the super fluffy stuff. And it is still snowing. So again if you’ve ordered stuff...it’s not going out yet. I realize it’s been 2 days...but um...can’t find the car.
So instead of suffering from cabin fever today this is what was going on here:
we suited up for some shoveling/playing in the snow
Good thing our hounds are brown..you can see them pretty easy
Lucy likes to follow zander around shoveling
and someone’s got snow on their nose!
we did finish a bunch of new project pouches this weekend and crafting monday (yes folks we get together ONE day a week-monday! and craft for you)
and here they are all lined up all nice
enjoy!

BELOW ZERO
♥ Comments (4) ♥
hi. Hi from outside of Chicago where it is currently noon and MINUS SEVEN degrees out. Yes. It is NOON and the sun is up and shining and it isn’t above zero today. Yesterday i think it reached 3. Not to mention we walked for many many blocks to Joy’s superbowl party. This cold has seriously kicked my butt.
So if you ordered something yesterday or today. It’s not going to be shipped until tomorrow or wednesday. Perhaps when it reaches ABOVE ZERO and my poor car will not sound like it is dying when i start it. If y’all are around here please stay covered, and slather yourself with moistureizer before bed. I swear that chicago wind can just bite me.
**** edited to add****
We added a whole slew of project pouches to te site and i have to photograph the new sushi project pouch! check them out! Stock is back up!

last swap
♥ Comments (4) ♥
Back in December, my friend Amy asked me if i wanted in on a swap with someone who was too late for a scheduled swap. I knew Vanessa wasn’t having a particularly good holiday, so i agreed to be her not-so-secret-santa. We figured we swap stuff. I sent her a whole box of stuff back in December before i went to philly. A spindle kit from Katy, with custom dyed colors, a travel case, several pouches and other assorted items i sew all made it into the box. I received my box from vanessa this week.
She made me a fun scarf because she knows my favorite color is orange. She also made me a fabulous box she made out of stamps and included some magnets too! I now have something pretty to put my jewelry into on my bedside table. She also sent along treats, including a marzipan piggy. Thank you very much vanessa. I hope you get your blog updated because you’ve been knitting some pretty socks!

something! beware another picture post from hell!
♥ Comments (7) ♥
I have definatley got something for you today. Man i was pretty lazy about charging my camera batteries for y’all...sorry.
I got like the best weeks worth of mail EVER. I’m posting some today and some tomorrow.
First I found out Suzie over at purly gates had a January Birthday too! She suggested a swap. I was kind of tired of getting people who flaked out on swaps and i would just get burned. But i thought about it. One of my best swapping people Deb, came out of a swap Suzy organized. And suzie sent me some stitch markers ages ago that i still use to this day. I knew this would be good.
I sent her box out on tuesday and she should be getting it by today at the latest. I seem to notice that priority likes to take 3 days to get to CA. So keep checking her blog for pictures of what i sent her. I didn’t take pictures...the batteries remember?
Anyhow...here’s her box she sent. She suggested we send some Garnet colored yarn and something local. check out her stuff:
there’s 2 skeins of lamb’s pride in garnet in there, a beautiful EAMES card!, peach lip balm, honey from san franscisco, black tea, chocolates, a soy candle, and a jewelry roll that has lavender in it. Smells so so good. I even made my sister sniff it this morning.
Suzie hit something dead on. Even Erin commented how the yarn was perfect for me. She sent a beautiful skein of sock yarn, and the colors are well very jen. The sun was shining pretty hard today so it’s a little harsh but yellows, oranges and pinks scream socks for jen!
ooooh look she sent LETTERPRESS...mmmmm letterpress...cards she made!
i accidentally left the photos of her beautiful wrapping job at home (i’m in the city at nat’s) sorry about that suzie. But all i can say is that she re-newed my faith in swapping on the internet. It was fun and refreshing to swap with her. Altho after looking at her items for a bit yesterday i had this sudden thought. Her stuff she sent to me seemed so refined...so elegant and pretty. And when i think about my box...the stuff i sent to her is way too much a reflection of my personality. And unfortunately i’m not very refined. I still hope she loves it anyhow. I’ll let you know when she posted it.
Second, my favorite friend over in arizona, ms amy (secrest out!) of sushi-ville...found some socks. She sent them out way way too fast. Cause i’m still working on her prizes and finding a larger box for all her stuff to fit into! I can’t wait to send her her prizes...i KNOW she is going to LOVE them. heh. Anyways, she did an awesome job of cleaning out the clearance section! I love all of these, i’m waering the knee socks right now! She even sent along another 2 tiny tiny little charms for the necklace she sent a week or so ago. I told her she needs to make a whole slew of these...i know i would buy a whole bunch of them. And if i would then i know y’all out there would too.
Ok, I saw Dixie post some of these on her blog earlier this month. You can find her stuff here. I HAD to have like five. But she only had one. Well she sent me three cause when she thinks of five she thinks of three. What she didn’t know is three chickenbutts are perfect! She and her husband, clint, make the guess what? chicken butt. Stationery i love to death. And there is just something about those chickenbutts that make me laugh everytime i look at them. Anyways, thanks so much Dixie and her zoo for sending me a little birthday hello and pretty card. Make sure you get some chicken butts of your very own.
And now i saved the best for last. Well all of these are the best, but this is something handmade! Erin gave me FRANK at our meeting the other night. FRANK is my birthday present. He is a sock monster. And he came in his own carrying case, he is wearing a scarf to keep warm cause it’s been in the single digits all week, and a note to introduce him to me. Jessica i do believe named him for me.
Apparently FRANK and I don’t like our bellybuttons touched. Frank has a bellybutton cover. I need to look into one of those. I think frank and i will be good friends. He already likes to hang off of my computer keyboard and swing in his little carrier! Thank you Jessica and Erin. You two are a delight to hang out with.
Tomorrow i will share a not-so-secret-santa swap i had with vanessa.

Nothing
♥ Comments (3) ♥
I’ve got nothing for you today. I’m gouchy, like Oscar. It’s been snowing here off and on for days. Stupid Lake effect snow. For those of you who do not live near a Great Lake or in a snowbelt and have no idea what Lake Effect Snow is i liked Wikipedia so you can be schooled. Just try to imagine snow that comes down so fast there are white outs...but 5 min across the town it can be sunny. Also it can be sunny and snowing, heavy snow. It’s very weird.
Anyways. I’ve got to charge the camera so i can show you my birthday swap with Suzy. She rules. I’d like to thank Erin for being the kind of friend who will order you things you need from the bead/jewelry without asking you. She also hand delivered Frank to me. I will post him tomorrow because he is amazing. Speaking of amazing, Kayt at our knitting meeting freaked me out so big time i almost didn’t recover. I was asking if she’d seen any loose garnets because i wanted to find 2 garnet beads for something and before i know it she is whipping 2 strands of garnets on the table from her pocket. This had me mystified. That will never happen again for as long as i live. But anyways thanks to kayt and Jill i do not have to make stitch markers for the porject pouches. Thanks guys, you have no idea how much i love you.
No red photos today.
i will have something intresting tomorrow i promise.
