not a very eventful weekend, but i had fun with nathaniel. We found a new pizza place. For those of you who don’t know we can only eat at ONE NAT APPROVED (TM) pizza place in all of chicago. That wouldbe Ranaldi’s in lakeview (across from the giant borders on diversey) Anyways, this one is literally across the street and one block away. They make a mean thin crust pizza. It is called Apart pizza for any of you who live near lincoln square.

we ventured to the japanese bookstore for fun on saturday and IKEA. I stopped in the giant mall and bought a new pair of VANS shoes. Nat HATES them. That is usually the litmus test for any new shoes i buy, the more he hates them the quicker i’ll say “I’ll take them!” They will be a nice summer shoe...and they should take you straight back to 1988. Except they aren’t checkered.

I bought Nat a gift last weekend and it was delivered this past week. It’s a fat kittie i bought for him thru Bright October here’s what he looks like:

i came home last nite to a large box that came in the mail. It was from Cara the counter part to My dorky best friend! In her cute little card she said it was a belated birthday gift. And because i collect snoopy this was such a cute gift! And no cara, i didn’t have one...my mom got me the charlie brown for xmas and i got zander a snoopy, but i didn’t have one til now! So thank you so very much for that little suprise! He sits next to ONEYE.

does anyone know how to make a good smoothie? Nat and i are thinking about buying a blender next weekend!

Good smoothies are easy peasy!  Esp. now that the weather is getting warmer and fresh fruit is more readily available.

A basic recipe is:
1 cup frozen fruit
1/2-1 cup liquid
2-4 bananas
ice

I use vanilla soy milk if I want something creamy, or orange juice (and maybe leave out the bananas) if I don’t.  If you are doing it for a healthy meal replacement you can add protein powder and/or ground flax seeds or some flax seed oil!  Some good combos are mango/banana/strawberry, strawberry/blueberry/orange...but use your imagination and have fun (^_^)

i used frozen fruit, like strawberries, blackberries or the to-die-for-mangos from trader joes, mmmmmmmmmm.  for each 2 cup serving, throw in about 1 cup of the frozen fruity goodness, then add like 1/2 c of yogurt (plain or vanilla or something else you fancy), and 1/2 c milk.  if your blender doesn’t cooperate, drizzle in some more milk through the top until it gets whizzing away.  the great thing about the frozen fruit is that it gets icy cold but not watery as it approaches room temp.  as if you won’t guzzle it down.  soooooo yumm=o.  i will be making some tomorrow morn for me and the duo - thanks for the inspiration!!!

My favorite way to make smoothies is below. We freeze tons of berries in the spring so we can make smoothies all winter long. (And it is LONG here in Buffalo.)

1 frozen or unfrozen banana
1/2 to 1 cup orange juice
1/2 to 1 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 to 1 cup frozen strawberries

Blend the banana and orange juice until smooth. Add strawberries and blueberries. Use the highest setting now, and blend a.k.a. “ice crush” until smooth. Add more orange juice if it is getting to thick or stuck at the bottom. When smooth, either eat it all right away, or freeze until solid. Both ways are great!

Smoothies!  I love them!!

Frozen Fruit
Keifer (similar to yogurt, I like the pomegranet)
Fruit Juice
Sometimes Bananas

I pretty much eyeball it to taste and consistancy.  Keifer and bananas make it thick.

Another good thing, freeze them for a popsicle treat!  (Those should be thinned out and not so thick though, they really require experimenting to get them right).
